São Luís, Maranhão, Brazil, to Build 1,000 New Public Housing Units

On April 12, 2013, O Imparcial reported that the mayor of São Luís, Edivaldo Holanda (PTC), signed an agreement today with Bank of Brazil to build 1,000 new housing units in the neighborhood of Tajaçuaba. It is estimated that São Luís suffers from a deficit of 85,000 housing units available for its population. The project has the potential to benefit some 4,000 families in the city, either homeless or living under insufficient conditions. The project has a total value of R$61 million, and it will create close to 600 jobs. The housing project is designed to cater to those families with monthly salaries between zero and three times the monthly minimum wage.  Read Article
