Robbery and theft on the rise in Uruguay

The Interior Office of Uruguay released a crime report today for the first period of the year, through January to June, that shows robbery and theft have gone up 8% nationwide since last year, according to elobservador.com.uy. These figures have brought about a number of debates focusing on the effectiveness of Uruguay’s security policies. Government officials argue that fighting crime is not about statistics and it’s not a mathematical equation, it’s about focusing on the crimes that have the most negative impact on society, and finding a way to combat them. Last year robberies went up 23%, so many officials believe this 8% rise is good news compared to 2010‘s statistics.
