Riot Police Clash With Striking Teachers Mexico City

Posted on September 12, 2013 • Filed under: Conflicts, Mexico

Clashes erupted in Mexico City on Wednesday as riot police faced striking teachers protesting against President Enrique Pena Nieto’s attempts to reform the country’s education system.

Riot police tried to hold back protesters as they marched on the main Reforma Avenue in a massive protest, one day after Pena Nieto signed in a controversial law to overhaul an education system.

After weeks of protests, including a massive encampment at the iconic Zocalo Square, protesters are refusing to budge for the upcoming Independence Day celebrations until their demands are met.

Mexico’s record on student achievement is one of the worst among countries of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, despite giving over a fifth of its budget to education.
