Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: New Fines to be Imposed for Littering

On April 9, 2013, Agência Brasil reported that the city of Rio de Janeiro has approved a new law, effective in July, that will fine people caught littering on city streets. The measure supplements an anti-littering law passed in 2001, which was meant to address a growing public waste disposal concern. The minimum fine will be R$157, with rising grades depending on the size of the trash. Those who refuse to produce documentation to pay the fine will be taken to the local police delegation to face more charges. Read Article
