Quintana Roo, Mexico: Alarming Number of Murdered, Raped and Missing Women

On August 2, 2013 Maya Sin Fronteras Noticias reported alarming figures in Quintana Roo in terms of violence against women, particularly within Cancún. According to figures provided by the government, almost 7 women are killed every month in the state, the majority of cases in Cancún. The state ranks first nationally in terms of rape, reporting more than one instance of rape each day and an average of 411 per year. The state has one of the highest rates of reported missing women, and 70% of women in Quintana Roo suffer from physical abuse. Many of these abusers include school teachers and police officers. Also, while there are no official figures for trafficking in the state, there are an estimated several thousand cases per year, mostly related to sex tourism.
