Portoviejo, Ecuador: 30 Months, 5 People Shot, Killed in El Rodeo Prison

According to ElUniverso.com between January of 2009 and July 2011 five people have been killed at gunpoint in the correction facility of El Rodeo. Officials say during this time seven people have been seriously injured. This report comes after five people were injured on Friday, July 22nd in what officials say was a gang confrontation. Officials say the first incident of gang violence occurred in January 2009, leaving three people dead and two wounded. The second incident occurred in December 2010, leaving one person dead. Officials say the incident that occurred this past Friday is under investigation. Personnel at the prison have not commented on how weapons used in all three incidents found their way into prisoners’ possession. On Friday night, after the incident occurred, an elite police force performed a search of El Rodeo for weapons and drugs. Those findings have yet to be announced, say police.Read Article
