Politician Acquitted in Mensalão Charged with New Crime in Minas Gerais, Brazil

On January 22, 2013, Veja reported that Anderson Adauto is under investigation by the State Attorney General’s Office in Minas Gerais for diverting $1.1 million from the city where he served as mayor, Uberaba.  Prosecutors allege that the diversion occurred between 2008 and 2009, after completion of a project in which the company involved asked for more funding.  The company, AMS Construções e Incorporações Ltda., delayed completing the project, a school for accelerated learners, between 2006 and 2007, after the Infrastructure Department ordered it to stop.  Adauto also served in the past as the Federal Minister of Transport within the Lula Administration, and was acquitted earlier this year of charges of participation in the mensalão scandal.  Read Article
