Police Operation in Brazil Combats Income Tax Fraud

On February 22, 2013, the Brazilian Federal Police announced that it was launching a new investigation (Operation Hyena II) in the state of Piauí to combat fraud in income tax filings to earn undeserved refunds. Five arrest warrants have already been issued, and 20 federal agents are on the case. The report states that there is a criminal group operating in Piauí that specializes in using citizens’ information to obtain loans, of which they would subsequently cite in fraudulent tax returns to gain a larger refund. A federal judge in the town of Picos ordered the warrants.  Read Article
