Police Fine Farmer R$28,000 for Deforestation near Campo Grande, Brazil

On January 25, 2013, Campo Grande News reported that the local Environmental Police fined a farmer R$28,000 for illegal deforestation practices in rural areas around Rochedo, about 75 kilometers north of Campo Grande, the state capital of Mato Grosso do Sul.  The farmer, according to police, had cut down some 114 hectares of protected forest land without authorization.  The farmer had also used the downed trees for personal use.  Activities at the farm have since been suspended, and the farmer faces environmental crime charges.  Read Article
