According to ElComercio.pe the regional government of Puno is hoping for discussions with Aymara, the Indians of the high plateaus, on the subject of mining. The government is hoping to avoid protests against mining concessions that were suspended last week due to the elections and will begin on Wednesday the 8th. The regional director of energy and mines stated that there is a possibility of establishing a dialogue, however nothing has materialized. A meeting was planned for Monday, but Aymara representatives did not show up. The Council of Ministers is confident that they will create a dialogue with the miners before the protests begin, stated the president of the Council of Ministers Rosario Fernandez. Police are well prepared if a strike does occur, however many are reportedly optimistic that a solution to the problems arising from mining concessions will be discovered.Read Article
