Peruvian Government Compensates Shining Path Victims

According to ElComercio.pe the Peruvian government began to compensate victims of the Shining Path movement, during the years of 1980 and 2000, on Saturday July 16th. Government officials say that a total of 20 million soles will be handed out in individual increments of 10,000 soles. The president of the Ministry Cabinet Rosario Fernandez says that 514 people who are above the age of 65 will be compensated since they are living relatives of Shining Path victims who were murdered, disappeared, raped or disabled. Officials say that a total of 3 million soles will be given to victims in the first stage of economic compensation. Many of the beneficiaries are located in the regions of Huancavelica and Huarochiri. Between 1980 and 2000, the Shining Path terrorist movement and the Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement (MRTA) left 69,000 dead in Peru.Read Article
