Peru: VRAE Communities Organize “Self-Defense Committees” Fight Crime

According to Inforegion.pe the residents of the districts in the valley of Apurimac and Ene (VRAE) have decided to create “self-defense committees” (CAD) to combat increased assaults and robberies on their population. These same community defense organizations were created to combat the Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path). The units will be coordinated with the district officials. Communities were worried about the rising crime and the apparent lack of attention given by the national police. After the first meeting it was reported that CDA efforts will be redoubled in monitoring cities and communities in the VRAE.
