According to Andina.com.pe the highlands of Tacna are trying to withstand temperatures as low as 22° below zero during the winter season. Temperatures like this could become lower in July in places like Vilacota, 4,000 meters above sea level. It is winter in Peru and July is usually the coldest month says Guadalupe Miranda, the regional head of the National Service of Meteorology and Hydrology. In Tacna, the temperatures are record breaking. In May of 2010, Miranda says that the temperatures in the region were lowering. Along with Puno, Tacna suffers from severe frost as well. Miranda recommends that the population in the region wear warm clothing, drink hot beverages and refrain from sudden temperature changes that can cause respiratory infections. Officials say that schools will be postponed if necessary and that they are going to address the need for emergency weather plans.Read Article
