Peru: Study Finds Drug Use by Adolescents Rose 18.9%

According to ElComercio.pe the National Commission for Development and Life Without Drugs (Devida) presented the results from their 3rd National Study of “Prevention and Drug Consumption in High School Students in 2009” which showed a 18.9% overall increase in drug use. The study finds that marijuana use increased 23% between 2007 and 2009. However officials say that in the last 30-days 51.2% of high school students admit they are using the drug. Additionally, the study finds that cocaine use among students increased to 18.3%, while alcohol consumption among students is at 60%. Officials say the study shows that 25% of high school students would like more guidance and information about drugs. Devida officials call for parents to be aware of their children’s behavior and behavioral changes that may be a result of drug use.Read Article
