Panama closes border with Colombia in attempt to stop drug trafficking in region

(CNN Spanish)cnnespaonol.cnn.com reported – Speaking to the media, the president of Panama Juan Carlos Varela said that as part of Operation Shield in the framework of the fight against drug trafficking would close the border with Colombia. Varela said that increased drug production in neighboring countries was a threat against Panama and added that although they have succeeded in reducing the homicide rate in the country a large percentage of these crimes are “strongly linked” to drug trafficking.
