Oilwatch groups criticize Rafael Correa in opening up Yasuni to oil extraction

Yasuni-Itt: Oilwatch Writes Ecuador President, Raises Ecological Issues

A coalition of Oilwatch groups around the world have expressed shock by the August 15, announcement by President Rafael Correa of Ecuador that he will permit crude oil extraction in the Yasuni-ITT.

In a letter dated September 6, to Correa that was wired to AkanimoReports on Sunday night, the protesting groups said, ”we strongly believe that the original decision to leave the oil in this pristine territory in the ground was the right decision and that the decision should not be revised or changed for any reason. We hereby declare our support for the original initiative to refrain from exploitation of the heavy crude oil of Yasuni-ITT. Read Article
