Number of Missing Persons Rises 33% in Cuiabá, Brazil, in 2012

On January 21, 2013, 24 Horas News reported a rise in missing persons in Cuiabá, the capital of Mato Grosso, in 2012.  Local police counted 785 reports of individuals of all ages disappearing, 33% more than in 2011 (590).  Investigator Lauriane Cristina de Oliveira attributes the numbers to more teenagers running away from home, as well as family members continuing to report missing persons over a number of years.  The director of the local police’s Homicide Department, Luciano Inácio, said that funding for search operations should increase in the new year to help combat the rise.  Read Article
