New Federal Justice Will Decide Fate of Mensalão Participants in Brazil

On January 12, 2013, R7 reported that a new federal justice will take on the task of deciding the final appeals and suggestions of defense attorneys representing those convicted in the Mensalão scandal.  Teori Zavascki assumed his post in the Supreme Federal Tribunal (STF) in November of 2012, after the retirement of Cezar Peluso (and the Mensalão proceedings).  He was nominated by President Dilma Rousseff.  The final decision must be made by February, according to Roberto Gurgel, Brazil’s Attorney General.  Defense attorneys will be allowed to present challenges to the various sentences, and Zavascki has the right to confirm or not confirm the sentences challenged.   Read Article
