Mexico: Hurricane Victims in Chiapas Demand Punishment for Former Governor

Thousands of victims from towns in the Mexican state of Chiapas affected by 2005’s Hurricane Stan marched on the main streets of Tapachula to demand severe punishment for the state’s ex-governor, Pablo Salazar Mendiguchía, El Informador reports. The demonstrators accused Salazar Mendiguchía of diverting funds intended for reconstructing the state after the hurricane. Though the ex-governor has been arrested and is in prison, it is for a smaller embezzlement charge. The demonstrators believe charges should be brought up for the much larger sum that was intended for hurricane relief. After more than five years, many of the affected areas have still not received the promised aid. Read Article
