Mexico: Human Trafficking on the Rise

On July 9, 2013 Ultra Noticias published an interview with journalist and writer Lydia Cacho, concerning the increase in human trafficking in Mexico.

According to Cacho, one problem is that this situation is often confused with prostitution, especially as the police, along with government ministries and other agencies, continue to confuse trafficking with prostitution, which itself is not punished as a federal crime. At the same time, Cacho stated that priority should be given to rescuing children who are exploited for sexual services.

When asked about the famous “Heaven Bar” case which resulted in 12 missing people, Cacho opined that in such places drugs circulate freely and there is an environment of prostitution or free sex. However, she finds it unbelievable that some of the customers have since been detained. Read Article
