Mexico City Human Rights Commission wants children removed from prisons

The Human Rights Commission (CDHDF) with the National Women’s Institute (INMUJERES) of Mexico City are holding a series of discussions questioning current penitentiary regulations which allow newborns and children under six years of age to remain with their mothers in prison. There is no State budget for these children, however, and they therefore often live from meager charity. It has also been reported that some mothers sell supplies like milk and diapers to buy drugs in prison. CDHDF has suggested, as a possible solution, a form of domestic confinement or house arrest for inmates with children, emphasizing not only women’s rights but also children’s rights. Read article.
