Mexican Journalists Work in Climate of Terror

Journalists in Mexico trying to preserve the freedom of the press in the face of organized crime and widespread corruption are increasingly becoming victims of threats and violence, ANSA reports. The Attorney General’s office shows that between 2006 and 2009, 74 cases of violence (or threats of violence) were reported against journalists, with torture becoming more and more common. The organization Journalists Without Borders reports that Mexico is the second most dangerous country in the world for journalists, behind only Iraq. There have been between 65 and 73 journalists murdered in Mexico since 2000, with 19 murders being reported in the last two years. Read Article
