Australian police discovered around 55 kilograms of cocaine and methamphetamine hidden in Mexican beer bottles at the port of Melbourne. 44 of the 700 cargo boxes on the shipment contained the bottles, which were hiding the drugs in liquid form. According to Octavio Dia, the drugs were worth $14.5 million, and one man, 27, was arrested. Police in Australia had previously warned of growing Mexican drug cartel influence in Australia. Australia has one of the highest per-capita drug consumption rates in the world and is known for its high cocaine prices, 100 times that of South America. The cartel responsible for this shipment was not indicated by authorities; however, police did state that the Sinaloa cartel is involved in the trafficking of half a ton of cocaine into Australia per month.
