Latin America region one of largest in mercury emissions from mining operations

Mercury emissions from the mining of gold craftsmanship in Bolivia, Colombia , Ecuador and Peru are among the highest in the world, representing a threat to health and the environment by high toxicity of this substance that evaporates easily and can remain in the atmosphere for years. This follows from the analysis of the center “Mercury Watch” dedicated to collect, analyze and publish information on mercury emissions caused by artisanal gold mining and today presented its findings to the delegates from over one hundred countries negotiating in Geneva treaty to reduce and in the long run, eliminate its use.
