Judge Rejects Ankleband for Corruption Suspect in São Paulo, Brazil

On January 9, 2013, Estado de Minas reported that a federal judge of the Third Region of the Federal Regional Tribunal rejected a request by prosecutors to monitor the activities of Paulo Vieira, accused of corruption in a national scandal involving the National Water Agency.  Vieira is accused of falsifying technical reports to receive funding for his agency.  Prosecutor Luiza Christina Frischeisen sought the measures due to Vieira’s great influence and appeal in Brazilian society.  Criminologist Pierpaolo Battini agreed with the decision, not advocating for Vieira further in the case, but supporting his freedom from unlawful imprisonment.  Read Article
