Insecurity threatens human rights in Latin America

The lack of public safety and the tendency of some Latin American leaders to perpetuate in power are presented as the two greatest threats to human rights in the area, according to the latest report by Human Rights Watch (HRW) released today Washington, DC

“We are particularly concerned that in many countries, major human rights violations are related to the problem of security of citizens,” the newspaper El Pais said José Miguel Vivanco, director of the organization in America. “The biggest challenge for democracies can identify is the lack of preparedness of the states that do not investigate the security threats are poorly trained, have few resources and little professional credibility with the citizenry.”
