Increased Crackdown on Mexican Border Forces Colombian Drug Routes Through Caribbean

Due to increased security presence and attention to drug trafficking operations along the Mexican border with the United States, traffickers have had to find alternative routes to serve the illicit U.S. market, reports Listin Diario. These new routes transport drugs from Colombia, through Caribbean nations, and into the United States. Puerto Rico in particular is encountering increased drug activity. It is easier for traffickers to take advantage of Puerto Rico’s affiliation with the United States and move drugs through shipping containers or on flights from San Juan than attempting to bypass stringent security along the Mexican border. The postal system has proven to be an efficient method of transporting drugs from Puerto Rico into the United States. Most of these drugs are trafficked to areas along the East Coast, such as New York and Florida, due to the presence of Caribbean communities in this region. Read Article
