Guatemala and United States to cooperate in anti-narcotics operation

President of Guatemala Otto Perez Molina announced that the United States and Guatemala will work together the coming July in an operation aimed to combat drug trafficking through Guatemala. Guatemala also plans to coordinate efforts with Mexico due to the 900 kilometer border between the two, Siglo 21 reports. Part of the operation will involve a search for unknown and new drug routes through the country. Perez Molina expressed his wishes that the United States will maintain its role in the operation as a country with a large number of drug consumers. Guatemala wishes to de-penalize drugs. The United States refuses to de-penalize, although officials have stated they are open to new ideas concerning the fight against drug trafficking. 80% of drugs arriving in Mexico stop in countries in Central America, including Guatemala.
