Greatly Overcrowded Prisons, Colombia

•As reported by noticias.terra.com.co, the issue of overcrowded Colombian prisons has been studied by organizations such as the Office of Human Rights of the UN and the Defensoría del Público.
•Different organizations have produced different statistics. For example, the Colombian government states that overpopulation in prisons is 30% while Senator Espíndola and officials of Inpec report it as 70%.
•One example is the prison Bella Vista in Antioquia which has a capacity of 2,500 but houses 8,000 prisoners.
•The increase is due to the greater effort against organized crime and the speed of judgments.
•Organizations have also reported human rights violations as well as problems with healthcare and nutrition. Read Article
