Ecuador takes measures to attack obesity rates

elcomunista.net reported the Ecuadorian Government has imposed a system of labelling for processed products which alerts on the content of fat, salt and sugar. The Pan American Health Organization issued an alert for the rates of obesity and overweight in Ecuador. The Government activated a series of public policies to combat it. On Tuesday the Ecuadorian Government authorities were alerted by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) by the high rates of obesity and overweight, which are “alarming” and are becoming an “epidemic in March”. Gina Tambini, representative of PAHO in Ecuador, specified that “we have an epidemic underway, obesity and overweight rates are alarming, although we are at an opportune moment to reverse the trend”.

According to the national survey on health and nutrition 2011-2013 one of every three children in school age and two of every ten Ecuadorian adolescents suffer from overweight or obese. Other figures from the Ministry of health show that since 1986 until 2012, the overweight in Ecuador increased 104 percent, and two of every three Ecuadorians among the 19 and 59 years are overweight.
