Ecuador recommended reading

Posted on June 24, 2012 • Filed under: Culture, Ecuador, TRAVEL

With so many people moving or considering a move to Ecuador, it is highly recommended to read as much as possible about the country. Having lived in Ecuador previously and traveled there for over thirty years I have accumulated near 350 books about the country and culture. I have spent a great deal of time reading and over the last several years there has been an explosion of publications. I have included some of those but also some old favorites that are out of print. They are not listed in any particular order. I may have included some notes or observations about the mentioned books for you. This is not a complete list – just some titles I think you will find interesting and informative. I will add to the list from time to time.
Regards,

This book should be mandatory reading for anyone considering a move to Ecuador – Hurtado is a former President of Ecuador and he tells you how many Ecuadorians think and operate. This book is a real eye opener.

An outstanding work on a very deep topic of Ecuadorian culture – Panama Hats – He spent a great deal of time researching this topic and the reading in enlightening.

Well, Moritz Thomsen found his calling late in life – an amazing writer – an early expat to Ecuador after having served there in the Peace Corps. If you have an adventurous spirit – this book is for you. After you read it – you will have wished that you could have met this man before he died of typhoid in Guayaquil.

Another Moritz Thomsen classic.

One fo Ecuador’s best known authors —- this book does an excellent job in a novel of presenting the racial issues that run deep in Ecuadorian culture.

Written by a diplomat from Lincon’s administration in the 1800’s – what is amazing about this book is the look at Ecuador’s culture – and for any new expatriate —- may see after some time in Ecuador – the similarities of that time still present in today’s society.

My experiences in Ecuador began in November of 1980, it was love at first site – both for the country and meeting my wife. Over the last thirty years I have studied as much as possible and experienced a great deal. All I can tell you — is if you are not from Ecuador – it is a very complex country and culture. I have attempted in my book “Culture Shock! Ecuador) to provide insight and to shorten the learning curve for anyone visiting Ecuador or planning a move there.
