Ecuador prohibits homophobic comments during Presidential campaign

On January 31, 2013, the National Electoral Council issued a new campaign resolution. Presidential candidates are prohibited from making homophobic comments prior to the election in February 2013. If such comments are made by candidates, penalties may be enacted. The declaration indicated that candidates must abstain from making homophobic comments during the campaign which could impact the dignity of those who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender. The director of CNE stated that their goal is to strengthen Ecuador’s electoral policy without discrimination. According to telesurtv.net, the National Electoral Council issued a warning on Wednesday to Nelson Zavala of the Roldista party who made critical comments towards the gay community during a campaign rally.
