Ecuador: President Correa warns opposition trying to undermine govt.

telesurtv.net reported – A coalition of opposition groups is seeking to reverse progressive tax proposals. Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa accused those of organising coming national strikes and demonstrations of seeking to undermine his administration. “The right just as well as left-wing opposition groups use political demonstrations to antagonize the government with the aim of undermining it,” Correa stated during his weekly televised address on Saturday. The South American country has recently been witness to often-violent protests by opposition forces, who are demanding that Correa’s government proposed tax reforms, that would make the wealthiest pay more, should be scrapped. The government has delayed the measures pending a national dialogue and retains stong support according to recent polls. August’s national strike has been called by in part by small trade union groups long opposed to the government.
