According to ElComercio.com the Metropolitan Municipality was presented with the preliminary study for a metro in Quito, on Tuesday June 21st. Francisco Javier Gomez, from Metro Madrid, indicated that average fare per passenger would be $0.40. The project will begin with one line, Linea 1, from Quitumbe, in the south of the capital to El Labrador, in the north. The plans include a metro line measuring 22 kilometers and 15 stations. The mayor of Quito says that the metro will allow barrios and parishes to have easier access to public transportation. Total journey time is projected to be 34 minutes. The project is being financed 50% by the government. Construction will begin in the second semester of 2012 and have an estimated completion date of 2016. This will be decided after the study finds that a metro system is possible in Quito.Read Article
