Ecuador: Nations Ask for Extradition of 33 Criminals Hiding in Country

According to ElComercio.com the current Ecuadorian government has been asked to extradite 33 fugitives with criminal backgrounds ranging from drug trafficking to murder. An unknown government official has reported to El Comercio that from 1995 to 2011, 21 nations asked the Ecuadorian government for extradition of 86 criminals hiding in Ecuador. Additionally Jay Bergman, the director of the DEA for South America says Ecuador is becoming the place for criminal organizations to hid and perform their operations. Edmundo Mera, National Director of Ani-Narcotics agrees that cartel members are coming to Ecuador to escape arrest. The United States asked March 22, 2010 for the extradition of Danio N. for illegal drug trafficking. However, President Rafael Correa asked the then Minister of the Governmnet, Gustavo Jalkh, to refuse the extradition since the U.S. had refused an extradition request of Ecuador’s.
