The national index has a base of 100 as of 2004. The CPI reflects the prices and spending patterns registered in eight representative cities: Quito, Guayaquil, Cuenca, Machala, Esmeraldas, Manta, Ambato and Loja, which account for 67.44 percent of the urban population of the country.
