Ecuador: CONELEC Denied Protective Action Against Rising Electricity Rates

According to ElComercio.com a judge of the Guayas judicial system denied a protective action against rising electricity rates for the National Electricity Council (CONELEC) today, Thursday June 23rd. Miguel Palacios, president of the Civil Council of Guayaquil (JCG) lead the indictment and will appeal the ruling. The judge says that she could not provide a ruling due to another ruling on the matter by a different judge. CONELEC is calling for the retraction of the increase in electricity rates for residential customers consuming more than 500 kW/h per month. Juan Izquierdo, a representative for the Attorney General’s office says that the judge had no jurisdiction for this case. Izquierdo says that since the indictment includes a public entity, the Constitutional Court should see the case.Read Article
