Ecuador: Claro cellphone company ordered to pay $123 million in back taxes

Reuters.com reported the cellphone provider Claro has been ordered to pay back taxes in the amount of $123 million dollars. THis amount is per a settlement over a six-year legal battle with the government of Ecuador. Ecuador’s Supreme Court issued the final decision. Claro has also been ordered to pay 29 million USD in worker compensation. Reuters report did not confirm if the 29 million was part of the 123 million settlement. Claro is the largest mobile operator in Ecuador. They have a 67.8 percent share of the market. Ecuador’s cellphone market has 17.8 million mobile customers. Read Article
