Dominican Republic: National Army Increases Border Security Along Haitian Border

On May 22, 2013 7dias.com.do reported that the Dominican army is planning to increase its border security along the Dominican-Haitian border by 1,500 soldiers. According to the Dominican Army, the goal of the increased border security is to prevent, in addition to other crimes, the trafficking of undocumented persons and the smuggling of goods and drugs.

The deployment will include the entire border, from Pedernales in the southwest to Montecristi in the northwest, an extension of more than 400 kilometers. The increased border security coincides with reports by government agencies and local organizations indicating that the trafficking of Haitians into Dominican territory is increasing, particularly the trafficking of children and women.
