news.com.au reported…IT IS one of the most spectacular railroad journeys in the world and one of the biggest engineering feats of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Ecuador’s national railway hugs treacherous mountain faces, passes through tiny villages and offers incredible views of the Andes.

Dubbed the most difficult railway in the world, it seemed to be a cursed project, with floods, storms, landslides and sickness halting construction.

After 25 years of frustrated plans and aborted attempts, work finally started on the country’s first railway in 1899 to link the coastal city of Guayaquil with the capital, Quito, high up in the Andes. Read Article
