Department of Civil Protection Calculates Natural Disaster Risks in Mexico City

A digital platform has allowed Mexico City officials to see potential damages in the event of a large natural disaster, Excelsior reports. As Mexico City lies in an area that is vulnerable to both earthquakes and floods, officials are running simulations to see where rescue crews would be most needed, depending on the time of day and the severity of the disaster. The projection tool will also allow officials to make better decisions about where to place buildings such as gas stations, which could exacerbate potential disasters. Currently, a massive flood or earthquake could have a devastating effect on the people of Mexico City, but officials hope the projection tool will help the city better prepare for such an event.
