Cuba: 50 members of Ladies in White (Damas de Blanco) arrested March 18, 2012, prior to Pope’s arrival

Cuba police arrested Sunday at fifty activists of the opposition group Ladies in White, in two separate operations, eight days before the arrival of Pope Benedict XVI to the island, while dissent is increasing its protests. Twenty Ladies in White were arrested as they marched after noon after attending Mass in the parish of Santa Rica, hours after another 33 activists were arrested when they went to the same church, according to a dissident. “”They were going to leave the house (of the opposition) to participate in the Mass held every Sunday, but were arrested when they left all,” he told reporters Odalys Sanabria, a member of the Ladies in White. Among those arrested was Berta Soler, group leader, said Sanabria.Read Article
