Courts Eliminate 12,000 Political Offices in São Paulo, Brazil

On January 24, 2013, O Estado de São Paulo reported that the State Attorney General in São Paulo has ordered the elimination of over 12,000 political offices in 78 municipalities between 2008 and 2012, on the grounds that the offices were created illegally.  The courts concluded that such offices were created unconstitutionally, serving to give jobs to political connections or to hire without any public notice or formal recruitment process.  The Attorney General’s Office also produced a list of examples of jobs created by administrations, including personal advisory roles and management roles for the distribution of agricultural patrol services.  Read Article
