Costa Rica: Websites Abound for Sex Tourism Industry

On June 4, 2013 CRHoy.com reported on the large number of tourism websites advertising sexual services in Costa Rica. Dozens of internet sites promote the country as a “perfect destination” for sex tourism, with some even offering advice on which areas are frequented for these purposes, as well as how to obtain a variety of drugs in the country. Most websites are in English and are aimed at foreign tourists who seek the country as a holiday destination for prostitution. In fact, on several occasions Interpol has ranked Costa Rica as the sex tourism capital of the Western hemisphere, with 50,000 sex tourists visiting the country each year.

Prostitution is legal in Costa Rica, and Costa Rican law does not prohibit sex tourism websites. However, experts admit that these websites can become a gateway for illegal activities such as trafficking. Read Article
