Costa Rica: Organ Trafficking Network Dismantled

On June 18, 2013 El Mundo reported that the Attorney General and the Judicial Investigation Office of Costa Rica have dismantled a transnational organ trafficking network. The criminal organization operated primarily in Costa Rica, with branches in Eastern Europe, while receiving its direction and financing from Israel.
During the operation, police also arrested Dr. Francisco José Mora, head of the nephrology department at Calderón Guardia Hospital, along with a communications systems operator. The two are accused of trafficking in persons for organ harvesting. Authorities are now investigating medical staff involved in organ transplantation to determine if they have any link with the criminal network. Read Article
