Costa Rica: Network of Organ Traffickers detained, Israel connection

Reuters – elpais.cr reported that authorities arrested three Costa Rican doctors and a Greek restaurant owner on suspicion of organizing illegal organ sales.

1. Three doctors were arrested.
2. Greek owner of a pizza restaurant detained – responsible for recruiting individuals to sell their organs.
3. Doctors allegedly involved in arranging private locations for transplants.
4. 20 victims so far identified.
5. Organs sold to Israelis and links to other European countries.
6. Donors were offered amounts of up to $20,000 and some traveled to Israel for the removal of their organs.
7. June of 2013 chief of nephrology at Calderon Guardia Hospital was arrested for leading the illegal enterprise.
