Colombian Coffee Growers Try to Defend Crops Against La Roya

•The National Federation of Coffee Growers is planning to fumigate 62,000 hectares of crops in order to save them from the disease that lost 1 million sacks of coffee last year, per elespectador.com.
•$6.4 million pesos will be required for the program $5.7 billion of which coming from the National Fund for Calamities.
•Luis Genaro Muñoz, director of the Federation, said that the target area is 190, 580 hectares of coffee plantations to benefit 221,567 producers.
•In the next years, the Federation also is planning to plant 130,000 hectares of resistant crops a year.
•The value of coffee has risen in the market, and as it makes up 16% of the GDP, the crop remains to be a large part of the Colombian economy. Read Article
