Colombian Group of Real Estate Scammers Rob Newlyweds
• According to elpais.com.co , a newly married couple, Javier and Clara, fell victim to two scammers who presented themselves as relatives of the owner.
• They paid 20 million pesos for a house only to find out about two months later that the two men were tenets, not relatives of the owner.
• This crime follows the M.O. of a group who obtain fake identification of the names of the owners of property after living there as tenets for usually two months.
• Between 2008 and 2009, 25 reports of similar crimes were made.
• Pursuit of this group has been difficult because they use different identities when they move to a different property.
• However, there have been arrests, and 9 have been captured and face sentences of 7-9 years in prison for legal fraud and falsifying documents among other crimes. Read Article (JR)
