Civil Police in Tocantins, Brazil, Make Largest Drug Bust of Year

On February 4, 2013, Surgiu reported that civil authorities in the city of Palmas, the capital of Tocantins, arrested a woman in possession of some 50 kilograms of marijuana.  The suspect, Maria Cristina Thomazi Bordin, was taken to the local Women’s Prison, where she faces drug trafficking charges.  Bordin was arrested on a bus operating on the Palmas – Goiânia interstate line, after a unanimous tip divulged that a large quantity of drugs could be arriving in Palmas in anticipation of the city’s Carnaval.  According to Bordin, the drugs were destined for Belém do Pará, and that she would receive R$2,000 for its safe delivery.  Read Article
