Chile, 30 percent of human rights violators still in prison

About 29.5 percent of all convicted, Pinochet-era human rights violators are currently in jail, according to recent analysis by the Human Rights Observatory office of the Unversidad Diego Portales announced last week.
The study determined that a total of 777 former security agents had been tried and found guilty since Chile’s return to democracy in 1990, with 230 receiving jail time. Of these 230, 68 still remain jailed (29.5 percent). The remaining 162 convicted rights violators either served light jail sentences or were released early under special government programs.
